Helping children feel comfortable at the dentist is an important part of creating positive dental experiences. Nitrous oxide, also commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and gentle sedation option that helps children relax during their visit while staying awake and responsive. It works quickly and wears off just as fast, making it a convenient choice for many families.

What does nitrous oxide feel like?
Laughing gas helps children feel calm and comfortable during their dental visit(s). Many kids describe a light, “floaty” feeling or a sense of relaxation in their arms and legs. Some may feel a little giggly, which is where the name comes from. Patients remain conscious and can talk with our team the entire time—they just feel more at ease throughout the procedure!
What are the side effects of laughing gas?
Nitrous oxide is very safe for children, and its side effects are typically mild and short-lived. Some children may feel slightly dizzy, tingly, or occasionally a bit queasy during or right after treatment. These feelings usually go away within minutes once the gas is turned off. Our team carefully monitors each patient and adjusts the sedation levels as needed to ensure a smooth, comfortable experience from start to finish.
Can kids go back to school after nitrous oxide?
Children can usually return to school after attending an appointment where nitrous oxide was used. Most kids leave the office alert and ready to continue their day. However, if your child undergoes an advanced restorative treatment, like a dental extraction, they will be advised to go home and rest for the remainder of the day regardless of the sedation option that is utilized.

How will I know if laughing gas is a good option for my child?
Laughing gas may be recommended if your child feels nervous, has trouble sitting still, or needs a little extra help relaxing during treatment. Our knowledgeable team can review their health history, personality, and dental needs to decide if it’s appropriate. Our practice also provides oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, and we would be happy to offer more information and answer your questions to design the ideal treatment plan for your child.
